... And Bootlegs For All

Megadeth - Live in San Francisco, CA, USA, 1984

Venue: The Stone: San Francisco, CA, USA
 Date: April 18, 1984
 Time: 57:13
 Size: 1 CD

Sound: AUD, A-/A, video rip, copy from master
Notes: Taper: Doug (former Megadeth tour manager). Transfer: Shayne S. Lineage: Sony Walkman WM-R2 > master audio tape > Nakamichi Dragon DR8 and M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card EQ in Sony Sound Forge 10 > wav > Rebalance in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +5, Bass +2, Guitar +3.5 > youtube > wav > Adobe Audition (mastering) > Goldwave > TLH FLAC.
Shayne's comments: "Another awesome quality recording from Doug for you today. It was so good that while spot-checking it, I thought it was a soundboard tape. Nope, the crowd noise between songs must make it an audience tape... but since the recording was so clean, I was able to put it into Izotope and do a rebalance, vs. the standard EQ job. Dave's vocals and the guitar were buried, and Izotope pulled them right up front. Gotta love that software. Oh, one last thing. The Izotope rebalance pushed the levels up a bit- the songs are fine, but the between song banter/crowd peaked/saturated a bit. Now that I listen again, it sounds like a board tape."
Let me start with a disclaimer: the show originally was shared on youtube, as audio, I ripped audio. So, if you a lossless perfectionist this may be regarded as lossy. I just don't care. Enormous gratitude to Shayne for sharing this and other gems at his channel.
My comments: Back when I first got a copy of this gig around early 2000's there was a lot of confusion about the dates Megadeth did in April 1984 (remember there was almost no internet back then). The recording of April 15 had already been circulating (Shayne's recently shared his source being master tape copy . Then I got Palo Alto recording being April 16 and then a real April 18th appeared (not the one that had been circulating for ages but being the same April 15). Some fellow traders considered it to be April 20. But I gotta disagree. People refer to Dave who says "Today is Black Friday", but he was saying that throughout the years introducing "Good Mourning / Black Friday" and if we listen to the April 15 recording, a guy from the club says: "...remind you can see Megadeth tomorrow night in Palo Alto and Wednesday night at the Stone in San Francisco." So I'm sure it's 18th. And especially now when I got this tape.
There were also several sources of the show floating around. Around early 2010's I got a tape from Ron, a person who was into trading back in 1982-1988 (I got some other early shows like TX '85 from him as well). He sent me the original tapes he had! And considering that he got it in May 1984, this was a very low gen from master! To my ears there was one problem with that recording though - I thought the speed was quite faster than it should. I thought. Now let’s go back to present days. After I compared all the sources, it turned out the Ron's source was the same as Shayne's but generated. And the speed was correct. The band was all sped up those days) So finally after all these years (40!) this is the ultimate source of this date. The sound of the recording could be compared to the ones done these days! One of the down things is a guy who is talking at the taper. I think it’s a sound guy, but he is not annoying.
Now let’s talk about the show itself a little. Surely most of the songs differ from what you all know and here on the official CDs. E.g. "The Conjuring" is announced as "Conjure Me" and doesn't have almost any lyrics. And of course, it's so interesting and entertaining to listen to what Dave is saying!! I'd give some examples: after SBTS Dave utters "Do you guys know how much f'n shit we had to put up with at the Palo Alto Stone? It’s good to be back with you San Franciscans...I'm telling you, never again down there, you guys are the only ones who deserve us!" After LDTC: "How many of you people ever loved something?...enough to kill it?...Well I frankly like to kill myself....This one is about a dead girlfriend." Before Rattlehead: "I remember last time I was up here, my mom said if I didn’t stop shaking my head so much I'd rattle something loose up there." Black Friday is dedicated to someone called Toby.
I think that's it. This is a real historical gem for any Megadeth fan! A must have, especially considering the quality.
