Taper: Doug (former Megadeth tour manager). Transfer: Shayne S. Lineage: Sony Walkman WM-R2 > master audio tape > Nakamichi Dragon DR8 and M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card EQ in Sony Sound Forge 10 > wav > youtube > wav > Adobe Audition (mastering) > Goldwave > TLH FLAC. Shayne’s comments: “it was the first show of a 3-night run in the bay area. these shows take place just 2 months after they played their first shows ever up in the bay. This one is probably the best quality out of all the 1984 shows. The Stone and this one sound pretty nice.»
Let me start with a disclaimer: the show originally was shared on youtube, as audio, I ripped audio. So if you a lossless perfectionist this may be regarded as lossy. I just don't care. Enormous gratitude to Shayne for sharing this and other gems at his channel.
Now the show itself. The band: Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Kerry King, Lee Rausch. There’s also a video of this show, well-worth getting for sure. So, I think I first got a copy of this around 25 years ago, it was incomplete, incorrectly dated with incorrect venue. There was almost no internet back then. I did a lot of research and finally after mixing versions/rips we had what we thought was the ultimate version of the show, the most complete one. But everything changed when I stumbled upon Shayne’s channel with this version of the gig in late 2024. It is complete (just some seconds of the intro are missing), it sounds very good (not the best sounding 1984 show to me). And to my ears it IS the best sounding source of all. So I would say this is the now the ultimate version. What can I say about the gig itself – one of the last shows with Kerry King as the second axe. It's so unusual to hear the way the songs sounded back then! If you never heard it and you like Megadeth – this is a-must.
